U.S. Women’s Soccer: Abby Wambach (Forward)

U.S. Women’s Soccer: Abby Wambach (Forward)

Goooal! How many times have U.S. fans shouted at soccer games due to Abby Wambach? 184 times, to be exact. That is the world record for international goals among soccer players. For women or men. Counting only goals scored with her head, she would be the 7th all time leading scorer in US history. The 14 year veteran played in 4 World Cups, including winning 2015 championship, and two Olympic Games, earning gold medals in 2004 and 2012. She was the U.S. Soccer Female Athlete of the Year 6 times, more than any other player. Wambach’s contribution to the sport goes beyond the scoreboard. She embraced her position as role mode and used her upbeat personality and boisterous voice to speak up for  women in sports. Wambach lead with her head not only on the field but off the field as well. While she no longer has the physical capabilities she once possessed, her presence, leadership, crowd draw, and impact on and off the field for women’s soccer will be hard to replace, compounded by other significant retirements from the U.S. team.
